As ever, I never stop experimenting. I can only be grateful for the wealth of inspiration that comes my way, and I work hard at remaining receptive to my muse. She illuminates my world as she continues to enrich my life – and my art trajectory. I revel in the richness of our world, the intense beauty of nature and multitude of landscapes, lifestyles and life-forms on our planet.
As I reflect on this past year, I am filled with gratitude and wonder at my journey. It was a year of venturing beyond the familiar, searching for new inspiration in corners of the world I had never imagined visiting. I was fortunate to meet unforgettable people in these diverse lands. Each person I met had a story to tell. Their dazzling traditions have much to teach us, and I was reminded of how both similar and different we all are. In their company, I found new ways of thinking and living. As I look back I can only feel grateful and fortunate. These lessons will stay with me forever.
I discovered new forms of life, from the delicate orchids clinging to ancient rainforest trees to the vibrant marine life in coral reefs. The natural world revealed itself in all its splendour. I drew from these encounters, reminded of nature’s endless creativity. Reminded that I am embedded in the web of life, as any orchid, sunset or creature. I was inspired to push the boundaries of my art. I experimented with different angles and perspectives, seeking to capture the intricate beauty and resilience of these ecosystems.
Exploring the light at different latitudes is always remarkable. Sunlight dances across the Scottish highlands, and painting the snow in hues of gold and lavender, is entirely different from the fiery sunsets over tropical oceans. These shifts in light have taught me to see the world anew, to appreciate the subtleties of brilliance and shadow. And so I translate them into my paintings, with every brushstroke feeling more alive, more connected to the essence of these locations.
Nothing quite took my breath away this year as spending time with whales. Witnessing up close a pod of mothers traveling with their babies was a mind blowing experience. The adults stopped to breathe for a while, and time stood still. Watching their playful infants jumping in and out of the water was a delight, and quite surreal…
These gentle giants, majestic and intelligent, live in intricate social structures, according to their own culture. They communicate with each other using a complex language that humans are only beginning to understand. I was humbled in their presence, in awe of the exuberance of life on Earth. This encounter strengthened my resolve to use my art as a medium to raise awareness about the plight of these incredible creatures.
Yet, amid the beauty and inspiration, I was also reminded of the struggles faced by the natural world under the excessive dominance of our species. The fragility of ecosystems, the shrinking habitats, and the silent cries of endangered species weigh heavily on my heart. This awareness has deepened my commitment to creating art that not only celebrates the natural world but also advocates for its protection.
As this year draws to a close, I feel invigorated by the lessons I’ve learned and the connections I’ve made. I am excited to carry these experiences forward, using them to inject life into my paintings with different angles, perspectives, and stories. Reminded of both the beauty and fragility of our shared blue planet, I am more aware than ever of the responsibility we all share to protect it.
Here’s to another year of exploration, connection, and inspiration. May we all continue to find light in unexpected places and remember the profound interconnectedness of all life.
This year was extraordinary, and I would like to thank you for your continuous support. I couldn’t have done it without you. I found endless inspiration that manifested in prolific writings. There were moments of unusual creativity as I experienced major breakthroughs. My artistic vision evolves as I tackle new technical challenges in my art practice. This progress is incredibly rewarding. I can predict that the near future will involve the synthesis required to complete several ambitious art, research and writing projects. There are several publications looming in the horizon. I look forward to exhibiting my brand new series of paintings. Watch this space for updates!
